Choosing the Right Cover Amount for Your Family

Why the Cover Amount Matters

The sum insured — the amount the insurer will pay when a valid claim is submitted — is the single most important number on your policy. Too low, and the benefit will not cover the costs of a funeral. Too high, and you may be paying premiums you cannot afford for cover your family does not need.

Estimating Funeral Costs

The cost of a funeral in South Africa varies significantly by community, tradition, and region. A reasonable estimate for planning purposes:

| Component | Estimated Cost (ZAR) | |---|---| | Coffin or casket | R3 000 – R25 000 | | Funeral parlour services | R5 000 – R15 000 | | Catering for mourners | R5 000 – R30 000 | | Transport (hearse, family) | R2 000 – R8 000 | | Tombstone | R3 000 – R20 000 | | Municipal/cemetery fees | R1 000 – R5 000 | | Clothing and linen | R2 000 – R10 000 |

A modest funeral may cost R20 000. A larger ceremony can easily exceed R80 000.

The Financial Buffer

Beyond the funeral itself, consider the financial impact on your family in the weeks and months after a death. There may be lost income, travel costs for family members, and administrative expenses. A cover amount that is R10 000 to R20 000 above the estimated funeral cost provides a useful buffer.

Avoiding Over-Insurance

If you hold multiple funeral policies, calculate the total cover across all of them. If the combined sum insured significantly exceeds your estimated funeral cost, you may be over-insured — paying premiums that deliver diminishing returns. Consider consolidating into one or two well-structured policies.

A Simple Formula

Recommended minimum cover = Estimated funeral cost + R15 000 buffer

For most South African families, this translates to a sum insured between R30 000 and R80 000.
